After my recent review on the Epona Tiger Tongue, Epona reached out to me and asked if I would like to review their Queen’s Mane & Tale Brush and I of course said yes!  With my excellent experience with the Tiger Tongue I looked forward to trying something else from the brand to see if it was equally as awesome…well I’m here to tell you…it is.

Before I get into the performance of the brush, I want to point out that this thing is biodegradable (well everything except the nylon bristles.  The body of the brush is made up of a bioplastic made with wheat straw! How cool is that?!?  The brush is super lightweight (like almost feels fragile) and bendy because of the design and material.  The bristles are a combo of Boar Hair and Nylon.

My daughter’s hair in the morning

I will start off this review with a little antidote about my daughter.   My husband (and I) have to this point purchased 5 or 6 different hair brushes for my 3 year old daughter.  She’s got fine, curly hair and is a wild sleeper so she wakes up with SERIOUS knots and bed head every day.  Using a de-tangling leave in conditioner ever day, even the brushes supposed to not pull on tangles and tear hair…do.  We had given up in frustration with each of us picking a favorite brush to use…and neither doing a good job.

Post brushing with Epona Queen’s Brush

Then the Epona Queen’s Brush showed up.  My husband within one use told me to throw all the others away.  We haven’t used another brush on her hair since.  It may not be the prettiest brush out there for a little girl, but it de-tangles, adds shine, and doesn’t rip her hair or break her hair when we brush it daily.  Unlike other brushes, there’s not a collection of loose hair in the brush after each brushing!  Since switching to this brush, hair time in the morning has gotten a lot less dramatic.  So…try this brush for yourself if you have similar problems with your hair!  For a human hairbrush…this thing is awesome!  Hopefully as she gets older she won’t need to have her hair brushed every day as it isn’t great for her curls, but as of now with her sleeping habits as a toddler…brushing daily is a must…so this brush is going to be our choice to deal with the daily grooming for her.

Significantly less breakage with Epona Queen’s Brush over my old Oster brush.

So the magic in this brush is obviously in the design of the paddle which is flexible and not firm…so if it does catch on a tangle, it has give and doesn’t just break the hair.  It really just manages to somehow not pull out and break hair.  It’s pretty amazing.  I am not a brush designer…so I can’t really guess much more than that on how it’s so fabulous…but it is.  So far it’s also super durable holding up for my daughter easily but also holding up to more of a “tough job” of Jax’s very thick tail.

Jax has a lot of hair, but I have noticed that I often have to trim the bottom of his tail often as it gets so much thinner there with breakage.  I do get a TON of hair in my large paddle brush every time I brush his tail (in fact…I generally only brush it once ever few weeks because he’d be bald otherwise).  Because this brush’s bristles are shorter and don’t dig into the thick tail as easily, I do have to do a bit more manipulation of brushing in sections or brushing against my leg to make sure I’m not just getting the top layer of hair.  I do find it does a good job of brushing out the hair and making it look shiny, it’s just a totally different feeling in the hand and I appreciate that it’s not ripping out hair.

I’m looking forward to seeing how this brush works in the long term of a year or so to see the difference on the breakage on the bottom.   For his mane…there’s a different problem.  He ripped out a whole braid rubbing at a show last year and we…I’ve been trying to grow that chunk back since.  So very little brushing is done there because I don’t’ want to break ANY hair there.  This brush is gentle enough that it doesn’t cause that problem, so I feel I can brush his mane again without worry.

It is a little more expensive than your typical mane and tail brush, but I think the performance of it is excellent and the fact that it is biodegradable is honestly worth the extra price in my opinion (but I always think about how long I’m going to keep/use something and how long that item will sit in a landfill once I’m done, so this takes the guilt on a hair brush away).  I mean…we humans spend a LOT more on fancy hair brushes for ourselves…so to get one that works excellently and is earth friendly…I’m sold.  Here’s hoping that the durability is good (I’ll update in the future) as I’ve only been using them for a month.
