So winter is on the way out, but that doesn’t mean we’re not still dealing with foot problems. I know several people that have been dealing with persistent thrush and abscesses and I’m lucky to not be one of them. Honestly, it’s a bit luck maybe…but I also think it’s due to the many hoof treatment products I’ve been trying and regularly using on Jax.
He is out in a small paddock full time, and even when it’s not muddy, his favorite areas to stand are of course…where he pees…so the ground stays wet. It’s a constant struggle until the heat comes. I am thankful to Corro for sending 4 different hoof products to try out over the winter. I’m always on the look out for something better to treat foot issues, because there’s not one perfect product out there. The final item Corro sent is the Hawthorne Sole Pack.
This product is created to both fight bacteria, fungus, white line and thrush, harden AND restore moisture. I have no issue with the performance of this product. I started using this when I got back from my holiday trip and Jax had a little more softness in his feet than I would like and tiny bit of thrush. It was taken care of pretty quickly (within a couple of applications of this product). It dries well and stays on for days (as evidenced by the lingering smell…get to that in a minute). I do think it does an excellent job doing what it says it does. The brush applicator is pretty easy and uncomplicated to use and the value of the product per use I think is good. However, there are a few issues that will keep me from buying it in the future.
This stuff stinks. I mean…lots of medicated hoof product stink…but this one bothers me quite a bit. I can still smell this on his feet days later…and the smell doesn’t get better. Get it on you at all? Forget about it. And in the same vein, it is quite messy. It is very thick and gooey and doesn’t come off easily. I have never yet been able to use one of these type applicators without making a freaking mess everywhere. It drips all over the jar, the floor, and if I attempt to be less messy…typically me as well. Let it sit a few days and it’s hard to open because of the sticky goo on the bottle. I’m not about to hunt down something to try and clean it off each use…that’s just too many steps for me. This is not my favorite application method for a hoof product, despite it working. I’d rather a solid hoof pack product I need to put in with my hands to be honest. That’s just a preference.
So…that being said…if you’re not a princess and those above couple of things don’t bother you…this product works well and might be perfect for you. But I’m too much a princess and I’d prefer something else. It’s not a bad product by any means…it’s just not ideal for me personally.
