This review is coming a little late for the launch…but perfectly timed for you. May Babes is rebranding to a new name &Horses! Because of the rebrand, everything marked with the old branding is on super sale…so the Artemis Breeches are currently $40!!! All the other items I’ve reviewed are on sale too, so if you were interested in anything…now’s the time! Anyways…back to the review!
I was super excited for these because…they’re green. I love green. I was also super intrigued by the weird belt loops. And I had a past pair of breeches from another brand in a similar fabric that I used to like. AND I’ve had excellent luck with May Babes breeches/tights so far so I was super excited about these. I had HIGH expectations.
When they arrived I was so excited. The color is exactly what I love on Jax (being the chestnut he is). The belt loops were interesting and not difficult to deal with like I thought they might be and add a little bit of a design interest into what would otherwise be a plain tight. The fabric is attractive and makes them a little more interesting to look at. The performance as athletic wear is good. The material made them appropriate to wear in slightly cooler weather (it’s not really COLD here…so I have only experienced like 40 degrees in them…but they’ve been fine for that).
They still have the awesome sticky seat that is just sticky enough, but not TOO sticky. And the design of the print and shape (the size/design of the printing going WAY out wider to help camouflage any butt dimples is still blessedly there). HA!
Care has been the same as everything else from the brand. They wash well and line dry pretty fast. They do tend to attract dust a little bit, but they don’t stain easily. Quality is great and exactly what I’ve come to expect from the brand. The price (even before they went on closeout sale for the rebrand) is more than appropriate for the quality.
As you can see…nothing much bad to say except…
Unfortunately these breeches were not quite perfect for me…however what made them not perfect for me makes them perfect for a whole subset of people with a different body shape than me. I chatted with Emily a bit about them because I was surprised at the fit, and she told me straight out she made these at the request of friends and customers with a more straight or apple shape as all her other breeches has been made to fit a curvier hip/waist ratio.
How can I fault that? I can’t. These tights were not made with me in mind (as much as I wanted them to be for the color) and that’s okay. So if you have a straighter build, these are going to be PERFECT for you. For me, the ratio of tightness between the legs and the waist meant that they want to ride down on me (even with a belt) because the waist is simply too big in proportion to the thigh/hip. As you can see in the photos, there’s a little bit of pulling across my thigh which makes the pocket seams distort a bit. And the waist is a little lower than my waist so my belt wants to ride up in them to go to where my natural waist is. They aren’t HORRIBLE and I have other breeches that do this MUCH worse than these tights, the fit just isn’t what I expected from past experience with the brand. For your reference, I am wearing these in a Medium. I can wear a medium or large from the brand, but prefer medium most of the time. The waist on the large of these exacerbates the problem of sliding down, so I sent them back.
Even still without the perfect fit, I find myself wearing these a lot this winter. They are gorgeous, comfortable, attractive and perform perfectly fine under saddle (they’re just not good to wear on a day I’m going to be walking a lot because they want to ride down on my body shape).
So if you have a straighter hip/waist, these are going to be perfect for you, so don’t hesitate to go pick up a pair. And if you just like the color and fabric…they’re absolutely worth the sale price even if you are a bit curvier!
