Last year I did some reviews for R.J. Classics including a review of their Harper Breech.  I had a lot of good to say about it, however there was one major thing that kept them from being a top of the stack favorite…the rise was a little too low for me.  Well…earlier in the year I got a surprise package from the R.J. Classics team – the Kaia Full Seat Breech.  The R.J. Classics fairy was ready to wave the wand and make my dreams come true.  Turns out they were already in process of patterning new breeches with a higher more modern rise. They call it “The Perfect Rise” and it is a nice mid rise.  Not too low, not too high (though nothing is really too high for me).  I was SO excited.  On top of the updated rise…the color they sent was also just FABULOUS.

Lets talk about the color for a minute (Grapeshake).  This is a really cool color.  It’s a bit purple…a bit pink…a bit taupy.  It kinda changes based on the light.  It’s a super fun, modern mauve.  I have nothing really like it in my closet.  I compared it with a few of my ES pads to try to find something similar…but nothing really is.  I love this color.

Like the Harpers, the Kaia are beautiful on and off.  The styling and color is very attractive. The silicone design is cute, not obnoxious.

So how about the sizing/fit?  The new mid rise also brought on a little bit of a redesign.  I do think I preferred the pocket shape on the Harper…they were more flattering/cleaner I think.  However this rise is SIGNIFICANTLY better, so that’s a very positive trade off.  I don’t feel like it’s 2001 and my bum is trying it’s hardest to escape my pants, which is fantastic.  That is a huge upgrade.

I have the Kaia in a 30 R.  I got the older Harper in a 30 L.  The fit changed a bit in that they made the standard Regular longer.  It does sound as if they don’t intend on making these in Long unfortunately.  The inseam is about .75″ to 1″ shorter in these than the Longs I prefer (they’re longer than a “regular” of the past).  So while they’re not so short to be a huge issue…they are too short for my inseam causing the knee area to be a little tighter around my knee to pull them up far enough to be where they’re supposed to be on the top.  Not a problem for people with thinner legs, but for me…a bit of an issue.  I wish they’d rethink that and do regular and longs again (but I understand for production costs making that choice).

Mostly the rest of the breech is the same.  The mesh bottoms are just a touch different in shape, but the same material.  The fabric is exactly the same.  The waistband with the interior silicone grip is the same.  The material is pretty flattering, especially in the saddle, but some cellulite certainly shows through on the ground.

They ride pretty similar in the saddle as well, except that these are better because I don’t feel like my bum is about to pop out the top.  LOL.  So these are an improvement over the Harpers in that department.  This material has also proven itself in cold and hot weather, so that’s fabulous.  And they keep their shape over a long day riding and only get more comfortable the longer you wear them.  The performance is solid.

The sizing on these aren’t quite as generous as the last set.  They only carry size 22-34 regular.  No 36.  No Longs.

They wash and wear great.  I wash cold and hang to dry and they still look fantastic.  This color has shown a bit more staining from the saddle than the Harper’s…but it’s the color and the full seat sticky that’s causing that.  Pretty standard for my saddle.

The quality on everything I have from R.J. Classics has been super.  I think the price for the quality is good (especially when on sale!). They’re not a cheap breech however (in fact the price has gone up $10 over the last iteration of full seats)…but they don’t perform like a cheap breech either.

The closest match to anything was the trim on the ES Purple Orchid pad…and even that wasn’t quite right. It’s such an interesting color.

Though they aren’t quite “perfect,” I quite like these breeches and will continue to love and wear them.  The only things that would improve them for me is if the fabric was a bit more compressive/stretchy (my preference) and the Longs were reintroduced.  The colors of their spring release breeches are really pretty (the knee patch also has a gorgeous green and blue).  While these are not my favorite breech in my closet, they are in the pile that I use regularly (I’ve worn them at least 5 times now since I received them a couple months ago).   They’re not going anywhere anytime soon! Thank you R.J. Classics for making my higher rise dreams come true.
