Our friends at KONG Box have never let us down when it comes to solutions for EVERY type of canine companion. Holley recently had a VERY extensive knee surgery, and she has been restricted from activity for 8 weeks. A young, working, herding breed restricted from activity? It has been HARD.
KONG Box provided us with a “Boredom” box for Holley during her recovery. She spent a lot of time in the kennel or confined to an area by herself. This was a challenge, but KONG products have been a LIFESAVER. We filled the classic KONG toys with part of her kibble ration, a KONG Meatball or Snack, and “sealed” the top with the KONG Easy treat. To make it a little more challenging and engaging, we froze our KONG toys. This not only cut out any mess in the kennel, it was stimulating (cold) harder for her to get to the goodies inside (engaging) and we were able to KONG prep, we made a weeks worth of KONG toys and kept them ready to go if she got anxious or bored.
The KONG snacks were awesome, they come KONG shaped, and took her longer to get out of the toys due to the shape and size. She had to use her brain and squeeze, drop, and roll the KONG around the room to get to the “treat.” We also used the KONG easy treat not only to seal the top of the KONG toys, but by itself smeared on a lick mat to keep her distracted while icing, massaging, and checking her surgical site.
The KONG Dental Classic Large size I was not sure about how to “fill” at first. I was slightly perplexed, as it is a barbel shaped with two openings on each end. I FINALLY figured out if I sealed one end with regular dog safe peanut butter (it is thicker and will hold much better for the Dental KONG toy) I could hold the toy and carefully fill with kibble and treats, seal the other end, and place it in the freezer with NO issues. This was her favorite KONG toy, as it was double ended. She had more peanut butter/KONG Easy Treat to eat, but it WAS not as engaging. She easily emptied the treats and kibble from the Dental version.
Holley can sometimes be hard on “soft” or plush toys, so I was curious how the KONG Bendeez Giraffe soft toy would hold up. Surprisingly we only had one leg and an ear casualty. She loved to “work” the center section with her mouth, nibbling and chewing out some of her boredom. But it was never “shredded” like I had predicted! The center section bends, twists, and is made of soft fleece with ridges to promote gentle dental cleaning as well! I quite often found the KONG Bendeez stashed under the blankets in her kennel. She LOVED this toy!
