So I was thinking of doing this article a few weeks ago and never got around to it, but the other day something happened that cemented my feelings on sharing with you.
I was standing watching a lesson at the barn and one of the ladies at my barn (who likes to buy beautiful clothes to ride in and outfits for her pony), saw my pretty blush pink quarter zip shirt and said, “Beautiful shirt. Is it PS of Sweden?” To which I answered, “No it was like $20 on Amazon.” She promptly said “Please share it with me!” So I figured there may be some interest! Here are my shopping secrets!
As I’m sure you know…there’s only so much a piece of clothing can do for you. Fabric can only be so lightweight, so wicking, so functional. Sometimes the price being asked is worth the cost…but for 90% of the horse riding clothing I’ve encountered…that doesn’t seem to be the case. It’s all the same or similar fabrics…and they all perform similarly. And the prices are sometimes crazy.
Beauty can change the price in our eyes from colors and prints to special details, and sometimes just a brand name does the trick (most of the time…this is actually the main driver). I admit I can be a sucker for those things as well…but I have have recently discovered that there are PLENTY of work out tops that function well for riding for a cool bargain if you know what you’re looking for. Here are some of my favorites straight from Amazon! The top three shirts I own currently and I have others on order. I will add to this article if I find more in the future!
Seemless Workout Top (tight fit, so maybe size up…or enjoy the tightness. Also not very long so may be too short for your breeches if they aren’t mid rise or higher)! I have this one in 3 of the 4 colors and I love them. Super soft comfy fabric. I absolutely love these shirts and wish there were more colors. It’s very flattering too…even on my somewhat fluffy body.
Lightweight Quarter Zip (this is THE shirt that was mistaken for a PS of Sweden by my barn mate…and the two below are from the same brand). Super lightweight fabric. Very comfortable and great when it’s hot. Not as flattering as the first one, but not bad either. Similar to most sun shirts.
Pretty Lines Quarter Zip Top – Beautiful color. This fabric is BUTTER soft (similar to the Tailored Sportsman sun shirts…but thinner weight). I really love this one.
Banded Bottom Lightweight Quarter Zip (same brand as the one above) Thinking I may need to order this one because the color is lovely!
Crew Neck (same brand as above) – Wish I could pull off crew necks (I have the most narrow shoulders in the world…so it’s not a flattering style for me). I’d buy a ton of these.
Long Sleeve Quarter Zip Yoga Top – Stunning color right? I have this ordered.
Floral Golf Shirt – Golf…why not? Looks the same to me! And how pretty is this print?
Short Sleeve Golf Shirt – So pretty right? SOOOO pretty. I’m not sure I could pull this off with my pale Irish skin…but you got guns? A nice tan…man…I’m jealous.
Beautiful Vented Jacket – this looks expensive right (It’s $40! So not cheap…but certainly not as expensive as it looks)! And so flattering. And I think I need one?! And in some super beautiful colors (I’d like it in about 4 colors…but you know…)
Reflective Zip Quarter Zip Top These look nice and lightweight and come in some nice colors (more fall-like colors though). Unfortunate there’s a 12 year old modeling it looks like…but oh well.
Other Amazon Favorites
Underwire Sport Bra – Hear me out now…this is currently my go to sports bra. Seriously… Reasonably priced. Make the girls look good under clothes. Lots of support. Now…getting them on and off can be a pain, but it’s a good trade off to me. If you have an injured shoulder…maybe not for you. HA! But I love them.
Sheepskin Brush – I have broken like 15 of those pet grooming brushes brushing out pads and boots, but I finally found a sturdy one…and it’s not expensive! Thanks Amazon!
Grain Bags – These are sturdy and reusable. Like regular zip locks they can be tricky to do up if you get the threading all dirty, but I have had no problem washing them out and going again. No mice have managed to chew through them (they just go for everyone else’s grain instead that’s an easier get). And I don’t feel bad tossing plastic into the trash can every couple of months when the zip locks get holes in them.
Wash Bags – there’s a horsey brand that sells something similar for washing saddle pads that costs more than 2x as much. Just saying guys.
