Kennels..Cages…Crates… Oh My!

Every new and seasoned dog owner knows this is one core piece of equipment that is (usually) required when owning dogs. Not only do they provide a “safe place” for our canine companions, but they also protect them from household, traveling and in our case farm hazards.

Ruff Land Performance Kennel Review

We have several canines in our “canine crew” that prefer their kennel for home and travel! We have had them all, wire crates, two piece travel kennels, wooden “end table” kennels and everything in between. We were super excited to try the Ruff Land Performance Kennel for home and travel use!

We chose the intermediate kennel to use at our best judgement, the Ruff Land kennel staff does not provide which kennel may fit your breed so it is at your own discretion. The website specifies “Due to the fact that Ruff Land Performance Kennels does not have personal knowledge of your pet we prefer not to recommend sizes of kennels. We feel consulting with your trainer or vet would give you the best results for sizing.”

Honestly we agree with their decision to leave the sizing up to the owner discretion. Perfect example in our case, we have four Australian Shepherds ranging from 38 to 70 pounds with different needs as far as kennel size! We measured Holley and went with the Intermediate size, she is 62 pounds and big bodied. (The intermediate standard kennel is 31″ L x 20″ W x 23″ T and honestly we wish we had size up to a large. It fits her well for short transport trips and kennel time at horse shows or on the farm, but for all day kennel use we wish we had gone a bit bigger. (This was 100% our fault on sizing!)

The design of this kennel is amazing. The one piece composite construction is strong, flexible, and aesthetically pleasing! We LOVED the many options for multiple doors and the ambidextrous doors that can be adjusted to swing either way. This was a game changer. We could arrange the kennel to match to area we needed it to fit in with complete confidence! They offer composite doors which we LOVED, as well as wire doors, replacement latches and parts for doors in case of damage. The easy squeeze latches were easy for even the little equestrian to operate, but durable and secure enough to avoid any possible escape attempts.

We also loved the options for add on’s and accessories. They offer door covers, door liners, kennel handle sets, single replacement handles, tie down kits, pads, storage trays that mount to the top (one has a built in water storage) which would be AMAZING at horse shows and traveling, insulated covers for the cold, and fans to combat the heat!

The kennel was slightly awkward to maneuver for me, but I am petite and struggle with most large equipment. My husband who is average weight and height did not think it was totally awkward with the strategically placed finger holes, but it would have been MUCH easier to maneuver and carry with the handles designed to attach to the top. The kennel is manufactured with threaded and pre-drilled holes for attachments on the top.

The overall design is different than any other kennel I have ever seen. The walls are tapered so that the vent holes will never get plugged, even if you slide the kennel up against a wall or some other flat sided object which is EXTREMELY important for canine health and safety! The interior floor is raised so that debris and liquids that fall or spill off to the side are channeled away from your dog. This is another feature that is extremely innovative and provides protection for our canine family members. The only time this feature was slightly inconvenient was cleaning the kennel, the water accumulated in this channel and it was a little challenging to get the water to drain out. I think a drain plug or hole near the bottom of the cage to drain would be SUPER helpful!

Overall this kennel is a CORE product that we will continue to utilize for years to come. The composite material has worn extremely well and we will definitely be able to use this kennel for YEARS to come! It is a great and EXTREMELY safe investment for your canine companion on and off the farm!
