For equestrians and dog owners alike, we all shudder at the word “WINTER” This means living with extreme temperatures, wind, snow, sleet, ice and the added worries that come with it. Our canine companions at our ranch live, play, and work in the elements so their safety and comfort in extreme conditions is a huge factor in our everyday lives.
The Extreme Warmer Jacket from Hurtta North America is designed to provide protection to key muscle groups and reflect the dog’s body heat to provide extra warmth. The high tricot hood keeps the ears and neck protected from the elements. Our German Shepherd was not a fan of the neck and ear protection so we were able to loosen the drawstring and let it sit around his neck, our Australian Shepherd LOVED it and we covered his entire head comfortably with the pull of a string!
I was very impressed with the versatility this jacket provides when utilizing the same product for several different breeds and builds. For our German Shepherd, who is lean and long backed and our Australian Shepherd who is slightly built and stocky (he may need a weight loss program..) and short backed, the fit was perfect. There is a drawstring along the topline that shortens the fit or lengthens depending on the needs of each individual dog. The rear of the coat has a generous opening for a tail (or no tail in our Australian Shepherd’s case..) that allows for movement, restroom duties, and protection. The leg straps are VERY well placed and durable, I never had an issue with rubs or discomfort even after hours of wear. The application of the leg straps was easy, as well as very secure. I was unsure of it when we first starting using the jacket, since it is not your typical button or clip. (I cannot tell you how many times I have been upside down trying to figure out a blanket strap configuration on a furry friend.. admit it, we’ve all been there.) It is a “hook and loop” configuration (think bra strap) that was non-invasive, easy to use, and durable!
There is an access point on the back of the jacket for a leash to pass through, and it does work well as a point to hang the coat to dry after use. I was hoping for an actual loop to hang the jacket to dry, and this was my best solution when we did not have access to a shower bar or clothes hanger. Visibility is also an important factor that Hurtta knocked out of the park with the Extreme Warmer. Even at dusk and late night barn checks, I could always have a visual of where everyone was with the flick of a flashlight or ATV headlights. The waterproof properties and quality of this jacket makes it a staple piece of winter equipment for our canine partners!
