I am doing a series of reviews on the natural (and awesome) products sent to me from The Simple Equine.  The third product to be reviewed is the Nourishing Avocado Tail Treatment.  I was told by the creator that this product is based on the very first horse product she ever created and that it was good for a bad tail, and it was good for a good tail.  Now Spice has a good tail, but like all horses will rub sometimes in the summer.

This product comes in a normal bottle with a normal shampoo like top.  It has a very neutral scent and smells very much like what I imagine straight avocado oil smells like (I honestly have never smelled it before, so I don’t know).  It is an oil, so it has to be treated as such.  A little bit goes a long way and it’s hard to get off once it’s on something.

This product was designed to promote healthy tail growth and nourish strands (and roots). You can use this product in various ways.  These are the ways I’ve tried using it:

1.  You can massage a bit into the dock a few times a week for tail health.

2.  You can massage a few drops into the long strands of the tail hair for moisture and shine.

3.  You can apply a more thorough amount to dock and tail, leave on a couple of hours (or overnight) and wash out for a deep treatment.  Use it pretty sparingly if you don’t plan on giving a bath…as it is oil and it will attract dirt.

As a deep treatment this product is great.  Two days before a show, I apply to the whole tail and dock and leave it in overnight (I don’t apply TOO much as a little goes a long way, but I make sure it’s massaged in well).  I wash it the next day and then put it in a tail bag once dry.  Show day I have a beautiful, fluffy, tangle free tail.

The biggest place this product shines as is a daily (or many time a week) preventative/healthy growth promotion.  At least once a week I add a few drops to various locations around Spice’s dock an massage it in.  Spice has a nice tail, but tends to get a lot of breakage as his hair is much finer than the average horse’s.  I noticed that while using this product regularly the breakage minimized and I started to see the hairs lengthen and even out a bit more.

In the photo on the left, you can see a big fluffy tail with lots of breakage.  This was before I ever applied this product.  In the second photo, you see a less fluffy tail (due to the oil application making it lay down, not because it’s thinner) and the broken hairs quite a bit longer than they were before.  I also want you to notice the timing.  First photo in June…second photo in September.  Do you notice anything?  He hasn’t rubbed his tail out for the summer.  The oil kept his dock moisturized and healthy and the oil seems to repel bugs, so he’s had no reason to rub anything out.  Another thing you might be able to see, the hair on the right looks much softer than the hair on the left.  It is.

I can’t tell you what kind of voodoo magic is in this product that makes it work so well, but I’m sold.

My only real note of any kind is that I wish the bottle had a drip style applicator tip (like a at home hair dye kit bottle…you know what I’m talking about right?).  That would make the application a little neater and easier.  (NOTE:  The Simple Equine now includes a spray applicator option for this product which makes application so much easier!  We have updated our review to accommodate this packaging change).

If you have a horse with a bad tail, give this product a try.  If you have a horse with a good tail, also give this product from The Simple Equine a try.  And what’s even better?  It’s natural and your not introducing chemicals into your horse’s environment.
